6th grade finger puppets are complete and there's one week of school to go

This happy face sunshine finger puppet has a moon companion that I unfortunately forgot to photograph. The sun has a gold glittered face, which didn't photograph so well. When my blog was brand new, I posted here about making these fun and easy finger puppets. If you want details of how they are made, check out that post.

My 6th graders had their final art class today, and took their finger puppets home. Here's a few more: a little robot dude, and a funky bird with a big beak;

and this uniquely original idea: two mummy cases - one open and one closed - that's Howard Carter inspecting the open mummy case;

the Easter bunny with a basket filled with yummy sweet treats;

an EMT (the artist's mother is an EMT) and Spongebob Squarepants (the artist also made Plankton but I didn't get a photo);

and finally, on the left below is a favorite elementary teacher who tells the kids she LOVES Elvis, and on the right is Elvis. Unfortunately I didn't get a photo of Elvis after his hair and face was done.

Lots of other adorable ones never got photographed: a piglet, a penguin, some butterflies, a shark, an alien, a dementor (from Harry Potter), some zombies and zombie hunters, a police officer, and more. My 6th graders had such fun making these!

    1. Thanks, Christie. The nice thing about this project is that it is so EASY.

    1. HA HA HA HA HA HA. 15 years? I have taught for 36 years (minus 1/2 year for maternity leave) so don't get too jealous.

  3. These are so fabulous! Did they wrap plaster bandage wrap around their finger and build from there? You know I love the creativity and different responses:)

    1. Yes, they grease their index finger with Vaseline and then wrap. I'm always VERY clear about what finger is acceptable - ha ha. Next art class I plug in the low temp glue gun and we use everything fom pipe cleaners to little styrofoam balls to cereal box cardboard to add shape and then wrap away with the plaster bandage. I've done this so many times with kids that I have my own collection including (of course) a dragon and a whole rock band still in progress, and lots of cute goofy animals.

      For many years, when I taught 7th graders, we made masks directly casting their faces with Vaseline and plaster bandage.

    2. About the masks - it was probably my favorite thing to do with kids EVER. They loved it too. A few years ago I made them in a summer camp class with kids I grades 3-6and they were terrific. Mone imbedded the mask on the front of a guitar she built from cardboard, another made it into a giant flowe, etc. it drives me crazy that I can't seem to locate the photos.

  4. I have great memories of this college art student who ran an art program from her house that I attended when I was 8 years old. She had us make plaster masks like this. IT WAS AMAZING. Later we did it in when I went through ARC alternative route to certification. It was my teachers fav project. I THINK I could do it with some groups, but they are just so darn large!!! It would make it hard for clean up:) So many kids so little time! My last day is tomorrow. Then a rally at the BOE because they are trying to take away some of our students and teachers and transfer them to other lower performing schools for "budget" reasons. It would be incredibly sad to loose these teachers and students who I've known since Kindergarten. Oh well. Nothing surprises me anymore round here! Especially at the end of the year with a new superintendent coming in. A lot is trying to get passed through right now before the change of guard.

    Enjoy the rest of your year! I am so looking forward to your first post about the new venture:)

    1. I'm actually quite terrified about the new venture right now. I'll be the only art teacher in the training group.
